However, calculating your ovulation cycle becomes difficult when you have irregular periods. This could make it difficult for you to conceive.
Don't worry though; there is a way to deal with it.
Consultant Gynaecologist Dr. Rishma Dhillon Pai says, "A 25-35 day cycle is acceptable. Anything above and beyond that is considered irregular."
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOD) is usually the cause behind an irregular cycle and often leads to problems while trying to conceive.
While regularising your cycle, your doctor will prescribe natural progesterone drugs along with metsormin, a pregnancy supporting drug.
Get Your Cycle on Track
In case you have a 45-day cycle, then you will have to start the pills on the 15th day from the first day of your last period. The pills are taken for a period of ten days. After this, you will get your period in the next 2-3 days. This will help regularise your cycle.
Based on this, you will be able to calculate your fertile period and can try for a baby around then.
It is a bit difficult to regularise a short cycle; i.e.: if you get your period every 15 days. However, do not worry as this can be managed as well.
In case of a short cycle, you will have to take the drugs on the 10th day from the first day of your last period.
These drugs are usually given for the first three months, until the basic development of your baby's vital organs is complete.
If you don't get pregnant after the first round of treatment, your doctor will repeat the process, until your cycle is regulated.
Say Bye-Bye to Side-Effects
Earlier, progesterone drugs had side-effects like weight gain and an increased sex-drive. But this isn't the case anymore.
"Any side-effects are negligible and have little or no effect on your health," assures Dr. Pai.
Once you conceive, do not forget to go for your regular check-ups, eat healthy, and take any medication prescribed to you.
