"Ideally, you should start menstruating by the time you turn 13 to 14 years of age. But now, with the improving nutritional standards, girls start menstruating as early as nine years of age", says Dr. Dhanu.
However, if a girl doesn't start menstruating by the time she turns 19, then she needs to consult a doctor. The most important factor that leads to absent menses is the frequent fluctuation in hormonal levels in a girl's body. The second factor is underdeveloped ovaries or malfunctions in reproductive system.
Vaginal opening blockage is also another reason that may lead to absent menses.

Once the reason is clear, the doctor may give some hormones to balance the hormonal problems if any or if the vaginal opening blockage is the main cause, a vaginoplasty or a surgery to open the vaginal opening may be performed to initiate the periods.
Apart from these, the doctor may also go to find out if there is a uterus present.
