Dr. Tibrewala advises, "It is always a good idea to keep pills as a last option. Try out some of the age old tips, which could really help you."
Here are some things you could try to keep the menstrual cramps low:
- Use a hot water bag under your abdomen. Make sure you keep a thin towel between your stomach and the bag, so that you don't burn your skin.
- Take rest during the first two days of you period. Don't do any strenuous exercise.
- Lie down in a comfortable posture. Usually, you would find most relief if you lie down on your stomach. Keep a pillow under your abdomen. This will give you more relief.
- Have lighter, smaller meals throughout the day.
Menstrual cramps are also related to gas problems. So make sure you don't eat anything that you know can cause gas formation in your body. Ideally, you would know what causes gas for you. But, generally, you need to stay away from:
- Potatoes and potato dishes
- Cucumber
- Milk
- Caffeinated drinks like tea, coffee, and aerated drinks
Dr. Tibrewala says, "Remember, these drugs are not really over the counter drugs. But, due to the self medication trend in our country, these drugs are readily available even if you don't have a prescription."
You need to make sure you visit your doctor and find out which drug will suit you best.
In fact, Dr. Tibrewala suggests that even if you are prescribed one drug, your requirements could change. So, don't continue with the same pill for a long time. Make sure you get yourself checked at regular intervals.
