Why Memory Loss?
In older women and men, memory loss occurs because brain cells fail to function the way they used to when they were younger.
However, memory loss can also occur when you are younger. Such memory loss is common associated with:
- Poor nutrition and deficiencies
- Inadequate blood supply to the brain
- Addictions such as drug and alcohol
- Allergies
- Low blood sugar
- Stress
Tips and Tricks
As you grow older, the onset of memory loss can be delayed. Here are a few tips to exercise your mind to reduce the extent of memory loss as you grow older…
- Eat fresh fruits and vegetables. They are rich in vitamin C, act as antioxidants and improve blood circulation.
- Consume whole cereals and pulses as they are rich in vitamin B, which improves neurotransmitter functioning in the brain.
- Nuts such as walnuts and almonds are good sources of manganese and zinc, which nourish the brain and nerves.
- Eggs - preferably cooked and only egg whites - fish and soya bean can help boost your memory.
- Avoid refined sugars.
- Learn to relax. Set a routine, take a vacation, delegate responsibility, reduce your ego, manage time, get sufficient sleep, practice deep breathing and meditation, pursue a hobby, learn to laugh and work on your appearance.
- Learn to express your emotions. You don't have to be afraid of crying. Crying helps you manage stress and relieve anxiety.
- Think positive.
Remember, the secret to a sharp memory is your positive attitude!
