Mind Your Mind
Dr. Ketan Parmar, Psychiatrist says, "Mind exercises help you sharpen your mind, improve your memory and even delays the onset of Alzheimer's disease."
Remember you may not be able to avoid the disease completely, but it helps delay the onset.
When you do mental exercises, there is a secretion of hormones called endorphins that give you a feeling of wellbeing.
Besides, these mental exercises involve a lot of thinking, visualising and concentrating, which keeps the mind active and sharp.
Keeping the Mind Active
Dr Ketan Parmar says, "There are several things that you can do to keep the mind active. Something as simple as doing the Sudoko (which is quite popular now) will help your mind stay sharp and active."
Learn, Learn, Learn
Learning a new skill will help keep your brain active and improve its strength. Just as physical exercise helps strengthen your body, mental exercises helps strengthen your brain.
You will find it difficult and will have to apply yourself and concentrate even more if you brush with your wrong hand. This helps your brain focus and concentrate first thing in the morning.
Mind Control?
Focus on a particular object and try and move it mentally. Yes, mentally. When you are focussing, focus only on that object, blank out everything around it, including the sound around you.
Focussing and concentration will help strengthen your mind and keep it active.
Something New for You
Dr. Ketan Parmar says, "It is always nice to develop new physical skills. It could be anything. An example could be karate, tai chi or even dancing."
This engages your mind and body. When your mind focuses on the new task at hand, your physical and mental senses are in sync with one another.
A Winning Combination
Nothing works as well as a combination of two senses. So while most people tell you to concentrate on doing one thing at a time, it is a good idea to smell some flowers while talking to someone.
This way you are involving your olfactory sense with your verbal sense and that always helps.
