Whatever be the reason, it is best to terminate a pregnancy in the early stages. This reduces the risk of several (often life-threatening) complications. Also, it is always safe to get it done under proper medical supervision.
Medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) is the termination of a pregnancy either by a surgical or a non-surgical method, before the foetus is able to grow and develop independently.
The decision to terminate a pregnancy is solely yours. Whether single or married, only your written consent is required… not your husband's or your partner's. However, this is not the case with minors(below eighteen years of age) and women who are mentally unstable. In such cases, a guardian's written consent is a must.
"According to the MTP Act, a pregnancy can be medically terminated up to its twentieth week," says Dr. Ranjana Dhanu, Gynaecologist. However, the method of termination will vary depending on how far the pregnancy has progressed.
Up to the first trimester, medical experts advice either drugs, menstrual regulation or suction evacuation. "There are several over-the-counter pills available to terminate a pregnancy in the early stages. But, you must always consult your doctor first, "advises Dr. Dahanu. The pill is to be taken with a prescription from your gynaecologist.
Most women assume that once the course is done with, the abortion is complete. However, this is not true. So be sure to visit your doctor within a week for a follow up. It is advisable to get a pre and post abortion ultrasound and a complete blood count report, to confirm that the pregnancy has been terminated.
Another method recommended in the first trimester is termination via suction evacuation. This method is like a minor surgical process done under general anaesthesia. In this process, foetus and placenta are sucked out through a vacuum pump. If there aren't any complications, you can be discharged within a few hours of the procedure.
By the third month, baby's bones usually form. In this case the suction might fail and an extra amniotic instillation is usually recommended. This method is like a mini labour.
| Stage of Pregnancy | Ideal Method |
| First Trimester | Pill or Suction Evacuation |
| Second Trimester Onwards | Extra Amniotic Instillatiom |
Make sure you go to a qualified registered medical practitioner. Also, inform the practitioner of any health problems, current medications or allergies to medications, and other health information.
Remember, everyone's case is unique. "No matter how good the expert, there is chance of procedural problems that could cause post-MTP complications," says Dr.Sushma Bhansali.
No matter what method you are advised to go in for, complications are likely to arise. Some likely complications to watch out for are bleeding, haemorrhaging, vaginal infections, infection of the cervical organs, uterine rupture and uterine perforation.
Some of these complications are life threatening (e.g. septic shock) and are also likely to cause life-long problems like infertility. The best thing is to undergo an MTP as early on in the pregnancy as possible.
Last, remember to follow post-operative instructions and always go back to your gynaecologist for a follow-up exam.
