'International buyers and foreign journalists unhappy' screamed the headlines of a daily.
Each have different grouses. One feels like the clothes do not cater to the season, another feels like the designers here seem confused and a section of the international media feels that the Indian designers are losing their Indianess.
We asked a few designers their take on the whole issue.
Anupama Dayal

Our skills lie in spring-summer and that is what we showcase. We only show what the Indian market demands from us.
Designing fur coats will be a waste of my time and talent. The international buyers need to come to us for what we do well.
The only people who really buy from us are buyers and clients from India and the Middle East. They pick our summer collections and that is what we design.
I once did a collection of jackets and they did not sell at all. We have to think of surviving in the domestic market.
This is our bread and butter. So I don't understand what the hue and cry is about when we are catering to the domestic market.

I don't understand what the international buyers are saying becasue I've had good sales this time. In fact I've had some of my biggest orders placed from the designer store Mumbai Se that retails in Jakarta and Dubai.
And anyway I want to ask, why are we running after international buyers? One Indian store has placed more orders than all the international buyers put together.
Let's please leave this 'Gora Chamdi' fixation and cater to our own country.
I am busy servicing my own country but I do admit that if a Brown's picke dup my collection I'd be super happy.
