4. Cholera
This is a bacterial infection that affects your intestines. It is caused by contaminated food and water.
If you have the infection, you will have an attack of diarrhoea that leads to dehydration, vomiting, weakness and muscle cramps.
This disease could become life-threatening, if left untreated. While these are some of the most common water-borne diseases, there are a few things that you can do to prevent them.
Physician Dr. G.M. Rana, Wadala Clinic says, "Most rain diseases are spread through contaminated food and water. And since there are common symptoms like fever and headache, most people make do with self medication."
It is very important to get yourself checked the moment you have any of the symptoms mentioned.
Keep Disease at Bay
- Avoid all food and water from outside.
- Stay away from stale food.
- As tempting as street food may be, give it a miss during the monsoons.
- Boil water at home.
The reason you need to filter and then boil the water is because your filter may not be sterilised and the boiled water may get contaminated when it passes.
- Stay away from roadside juices like sugarcane juices. The fruits may not be stored hygienically and bacteria may form in humid and wet weather.
- If you are buying mineral water, then make sure that you buy it from the chemist or from the dealer.
So stay safe and healthy this monsoon and keep the dreaded diseases at bay.
