Sometimes fever during the monsoon is not the fever that will just go away because it is not the 'usual' cold-induced tiredness. It may drain you of all your strength, require bed-rest that could go into a couple of weeks and could even lead to hospitalisation.
General Practitioner Kusum Shenoi from Mumbai warns you about the vital signs about fever that could lead to a graver illness.
Here are some signs that you should never ignore.
- If you are not responding to conventional medicines including paracetamol tablet every 6 hours then you need to get all blood tests done to find out what the fever could be leading to.
- If you see haemorrhages or bruise marks on your body then it could be a sign of dengue.
- If you have very high fever that is accompanied with headaches, vomitting and chills, then it could be malarial fever.
- If you have fever that is accompanied by loss of consciousness, it could be a sign of meningitis.
- Recurring fever signals that there is something wrong and you need to get all your blood tests done immediately.
- If you have persistent fever (i.e. fever that does not subside at all) then this could signal a urinary tract infection or even tuberculosis.

Some underlying cancers also cause prolonged fever. But remember this does not mean that all cases of prolonged fever signal cancer.
Dr. Kusum Shenoi, general practitioner says, "Remember that no one can prevent viral fever. Even a healthy person can get it. So if you are suffering form viral fever, then make sure that get the required bed rest and stay home. It is as simple as not spreading the problem."
