What Is Cholesterol
Cholesterol is a building block of your body just like proteins and vitamins. Your body needs some amount of cholesterol as it protects your body.
Cholesterol in the right amount is good for your body. This type of cholesterol is called High Density Lipid Profile (HDL). However, there is also bad cholesterol present in your body called as Low Density Lipid Profile (LDL). This is the excess cholesterol which your body does not need.
How Will You Know?
The only problem with cholesterol is that it has no symptoms as such. So, you may not know you have high cholesterol till you get a test done. The only way you can know about your cholesterol levels is through a lipid test which is done by taking your blood.
Most doctors suggest a lipid test once a year or at least once in five years.
Blame It on the Food...
Food with high levels of fat lead to the rise of LDL levels in your body. Saturated fat like vanaspati or dalda can lead to an increase in the LDL levels of your body. Instead of opting for oils like til oil, go for oil that is extracted from plants.
Go for oils like sunflower oil, which is low in cholesterol. Avoid eating red meat like beef, mutton or pork. White meat is safe as long as it is consumed without the skin and in moderate quantities.
