Or you want to lift your little baby girl, but try as you may, the sharp shooting pains on your hands and wrists makes it a harrowing task.
Sounds scary?
If you happen to suffer from regular pain and numbness in your hands and wrists, then don't neglect them as signs of a sprain. It could be an indication of something more serious like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS).
But What is this Syndrome?
Carpel Tunnel Syndrome is characterised by numbness, pain, tingling and weakness of the hands.
The carpal tunnel is located in the central part of your wrist. When there is increased pressure within this tunnel, the median nerve that travels through this tunnel gets compressed, thereby making it difficult to use your hand to do simple tasks.
Are You Prone to It?
You are prone to it, if you have any of these factors that can cause the inflammation of the wrist.
- Endocrine disorders like diabetes and hypothyroidism
- Obesity
- Arthritis of the wrist
- Wrist fracture
- Sprain
- Alcoholism
- Pregnancy induced diabetes and water retention
- Excessive weight training
Plus, women in India tend to do more repetitive physical work like sewing, cooking, lifting etc.," says Dr. Vijay Kumar, Orthopaedic Surgeon, AIMS, Kerala.
Does excessive use of wrists and hands lead to CTS?
The intensity, duration and frequency of any activity and its relation to carpal tunnel syndrome are still being investigated by doctors.
There are no concrete results to prove that excessive stirring, sewing or usage of the computer leads to CTS.
How would I know if I have CTS?
Certain symptoms of this problem include numbness, pain and a tingling sensation that can extend from the fingers to the elbow.
If you have difficulty feeling or handling small objects, or you feel weakness in the hands and drop objects, then consult an orthopaedist immediately.
These symptoms are usually worse at night or while doing certain work that requires putting pressure on the wrists. In a mild case, you can relieve the pain temporarily by shaking your hands.
