What Ails Your Nails?
A chipped or broken nail is easy to ignore. But is there more to the problem than meets the eye? If your nails chip, break, bend or are weak in appearance and texture then they are 'brittle'. Other nail problems include: unusually thick or thinning nails and nails that split and fray.
Most aspire for perfect oval or square shaped nails. But sometimes those stubborn extensions have a mind of their own. Here's a look at some infamous shapes problem nails have.
- Clubbing - Nails curve down around the fingertips with nail beds that bulge and appear 'peaked'.
- Spooning - Nails curve upwards
- Vertical Grooves - Everyone has grooves in their nails. However, in this condition the ridges are unusually deep.
Colours of Poor Health
Ideally nail beds should be a healthy pink. However, something is wrong if you have:
White lines across the nail
Opaque white nails with a dark band at the fingertip
Nails which are unusually pale
Yellow, brown, grey or copper coloured nail bed
Dark nails
Stains on the nail plate
Marks That Are More Than Ugly
It is easy to overlook marks on nails. However if you have any that fall into the category below, it is time to visit a doctor.
Red skin at the base of the nail
Parallel white lines on the nails
Blue lunulae (when the base of your nail turns blue)
Receded lunulae (when the base of your nail decreases)
Large lunulae (the base of the crescent on the nail is unusually large)
