Attention… At Ease!
If you have a bad posture while standing, you are at maximum risk!
Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr. Pervez Sidhwa, says, "Slouching, hunched shoulders, as well as standing for long periods can have a bad effect on your backbone! The hip joints could be at risk of weakening."
Apart from that, you could also get Spondylitis, which is caused by the hunching of the neck.
Even the limb muscles can be weakened, leading to arthritis.
- Don't stand for a long period of time at a stretch.
- Always keep your shoulders back.
- Tuck your abdomen.
- Do light exercises regularly.
- Always keep a six inch gap between your legs while standing.
- Keep your neck straight.
- Take a hot water shower.
- Have regular massages to loosen your stiff muscles.
- Have a hot oil (preferably Ayurvedic) rub on your neck and lower back.
- Swimming is one of the best ways to relieve back tension.
Sitting Pretty
Dr. Patil, who is also a yoga expert, says that a bad posture while sitting can cause immense harm because the lower back is at the greatest risk, which can cause an early degeneration to your spine.
While sitting you need to ensure that your back and neck is supported so that it does not add any pressure to your spine. Your chair should also ideally be reclined at 20 or 30 degrees.
If you are sitting on the floor, sit straight with your legs crossed or legs folded.
Sleeping Beauty
Fitness Expert, Mickey Mehta, explains, "Our body is made in such a way that promotes sleeping on our back."
For example, the skull is considerably flat on the back, and so is the back. Even the buttocks provide a cushioning to the hip bone while sleeping. Apart from that, the back of the thigh is flat and the calf has a cushion for your lower limb.
Mickey Mehta recommends you go to sleep on your back. Then you can turn to your left because this position helps in better digestion and does not put too much stress on your heart.
- Sleeping on your belly can cause more harm than good because it increases the pressure on vital organs.
- Never use a big pillow as it can add pressure to your neck.
- If you are experiencing stress on any body part, make sure you have appropriate support while sleeping. For example, if you have a back problem, keep a support like a waist band.
Apart from that, Dr. Patil, says, "Covering your head while sleeping could be dangerous."
However, it is ok if:
- You keep your nostrils out of the covers.
- You cover yourself completely but with a thin bed sheet.
The problem occurs if you cover yourself completely with a thick sheet or a blanket. Since you are breathing carbon dioxide throughout the night, you could wake up every morning feeling drowsy. Sometimes, you could even suffocate while sleeping.
