Osteoporosis is a silent disease that weakens bones, subjecting the patient to brittle bones, difficult fractures and joint problems.
However, the good news is that it can be prevented with correct diet and exercise.
What Is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis literally means porous bones. This condition described bones with such a low density, that they become extremely fragile and susceptible to fractures at smallest knock.
Till osteoporosis actually results into broken bones, it's difficult to know about its existence in the body.
Sometimes difficult fractures caused by osteoporosis, including those of spine and hip, as well as completely collapsed vertebrae can prove fatal.
Who Is at Risk?
According to the global statistics by National Osteoporosis Foundation, US, Women form around eighty percent of population having osteoporosis, but it can be found among men too (Refer to their site for more info).
Women above 30, especially those with calcium and vitamin D deficiency are prone to this disease. Those who have had personal history of frequent fractures should also keep a tab on possibility of osteoporosis.
The Osteoporosis survey suggests that lack of oestrogen, the 'female' hormone, can result in osteoporosis too. Women who have had menstrual problems like untimely menopause or Poly Cystic Ovarian Disorder (PCOD) should watch out.
If you have sedentary lifestyle, go on diets frequently, are anorexic, smoke or drink, you are more exposed to osteoporosis.

How to Detect?
A Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test is crucial to detect the existence and magnitude of osteoporosis. Gynaecologist or orthopaedic experts may prescribe it, buy you can get a prescription from general practitioners as well.
There are two types of BMD:
- Baseline BMD - This is a simple ultrasound examination that has around 70 percent accuracy. This is the best and cheap form of screening test. It can be done at all clinics and hospitals and will cost around Rs.200.
- Dexa BMD - This is an advanced test with over 95 percent accuracy. This is mandatory if your screening test has found signs of osteoporosis. This facility is available at selected hospitals and health centres. It will cost around Rs.2000. Consult your gynaecologist or orthopaedic surgeon before taking it.
