"None of my clothes are fitting me anymore. I am perpetually struggling with my jeans everyday. Ever since I stopped going to the gym I have gained nine kgs," says Sudeshna Saha, fashion designer.
Because your body is accustomed to heavy exercises, it reacts adversely when you suddenly stop exercising. The curves start straightening up and all the flab you lost with sheer effort is restored.
Overdoing the Workout Routine?
Usually when you start working out, you are highly enthusiastic about training and tend to follow a diet to lose weight quickly. After the initial few months, when you have lost a few kilos, the enthusiasm dies out and you have other priorities to tend to.
According to Deanne, if you subject your body to inconsistent fitness routines and crash diets, you will face health problems later on.
Increased Appetite?
"By the time I stopped working out my appetite had increased immensely but I did not exercise at all. I've always been thin but I gained three to four kilos after I stopped my workout," says Kritika Saxena, a journalist.
Working out does increase your appetite because you begin to burn more calories, exercising accelerates your rate of metabolism and blood circulation which in turn increases your energy levels.
Deanne strongly advises against such excessive workouts and crash diets. If you starve the body, the moment you resume a normal diet it will store food and your metabolic rate will fall immensely.
She also recommendeds that you eat a light dinner three hours before bed time and never skip breakfast.
What to Do When
"You need to incorporate fitness into your daily routine. It should be as mandatory as brushing your teeth and having bath even when you are on a break," says Deanne.
Diets are temporary and you can never be on a diet all your life. It is very essential for you to change your lifestyle and adapt to health foods and not diet food on a regular basis. So instead of not eating butter at all, you could have low fat butter.
Avoid junk food when you are on a break. When you are on a holiday also indulge in some sort of exercises like swimming, playing your favorite sport, dancing, running, trekking. If you feel the need to break out of your workout routine for awhile indulge in fun exercises such as dancing.
At least contribute half an hour to exercise thrice a week in order to not gain weight after leaving the gym.
