1. Grand Finale
A major way to cut down on unwanted expenses is by having one function - the grand finale, which will be the highlight of your wedding. Keep the rest simple. Have a simple wedding and a grand reception or vice-versa. Combine two functions into one major event to save on money as well. For example, combine your mehendi and sangeet ceremonies.
2. Rock DJ?
Instead of spending a bomb on the whole song and dance routine, save money. A DJ is a waste if your guests don't take to the dance floor! Instead, hire a sound system or borrow your friend's fancy music player and a collection of CDs / MP3s. Assign a family member or friend to be the DJ for the evening.
3. When Huger Strikes…
Your wedding feast has to be of the highest quality, so don't compromise on that. But cut down on the number of dishes served / variety of cuisine to avoid waste. Caterers are wiling to bargain on prices, so convince him to throw in an extra dessert if he doesn't give a discount!
4. Designs for You
Once you have booked the venue decorator, take time out and sit with them to discuss ideas for the decor. The type of flower or fabric used can increase costs! So substitute the expensive material with a cheaper one if you have an option.
5. Hidden Talents
Sometimes you may be completely unaware that a few talents can come in handy during a wedding. If you have been going to hobby classes like candle making, flower arrangements, etc, use these in your wedding. This will give you a chance to make your wedding even more special for your fiancé.
6. Flying High!
If you plan on sponsoring air travel expenses for close family and friends, do it the smart way! Book your tickets at least a month in advance for approximately half price. And book them as soon as your wedding date is finalised.
7. Creativity at Work
Put your creative mind to work by designing your own wedding card. To make it easier design it according to your theme. For example, if your theme is Radha - Krishna then have their picture on the invite, or the can look like a peacock feather.
8. Family Affair
Make your wedding a truly family affair. Involve your family and friends in the wedding process. Ask an uncle to oversee the food and decorations and have a friend pick and drop relatives visiting from another city / country. Your big, fat, Indian wedding need not be an expensive affair. Make sure you follow these simple tips.
