It is only obvious that you will want to look your best at a wedding, but do you know what yis appropriate?
Image consultant Rukshana Eisa evaluates four situations and tells you how you should dress at different weddings.
In the Family
Andrea and Nicole Ferreira are sisters and are extremely close. Naturally, Nicole wanted to look her absolute best for Andrea's wedding. In all her enthusiasm she ended up looking even better than the bride.
Her outfit was much better and worse, all the guests complimented her!
Rukshana Says
If this happens, then somebody in the family has to talk to the sister and tell her that it is the brides' day.
As a sister, I know that she wants to look her best, but remember that the outfit needs to be toned down compared to the bride's ensemble.
Your Best Friend's Wedding
Shalin Abraham and Niharika Chawla have been best friends since they were kids. Shalin was over excited about Niharika's wedding. It was also the first Hindu wedding that she attended.
Shalin knew that an Indian ensemble would go, but which one? She could've asked Niharika, but she was busy with enough. So she decided to rely on what a few other friends told her and her instinct, of course.
"Go Indian, be different," was what Shalin was told. So she had her local designer design a lehenga that looked like a saree, with an elaborate choli. And since it was a Punjabi wedding, she went all out on the embroidery.
Shalin ended up looking lovely and her outfit but the bridal saree in the dark.
Rukshana Says
It is imperative to find out what the bride is wearing. It is nice to be different but remember that your outfit simply cannot overshadow the bride.
Once you know what your friend is wearing, order your outfit accordingly. Do not wear the same colour as the bride and remember that the outfit cannot be heavier than the bride's.
Just a Friend
Toulika Rohatgi was not too keen on dressing-up for Shweta Doshi's wedding. They were just friends after all. She decided to go with formal black trousers, s semi-backless top and a heavy neck-piece.
Since it was a Hindu wedding, almost everyone was dressed in traditional clothes. Toulika's ensemble stood out simply because it was a sexy western one, topped off with a beautiful neckpiece.
Dressing differently and dressing down had the opposite effect in this case.
Rukshana Says
If you want to stick out like a sore thumb, then it really is your call. Besides people sniggering and talking about your faux-pas, it is just good etiquette to dress for the occasion.
Dressing drastically different not only will draw attention to you, it is insulting to your hosts too.
If you really do not want to dress-up, you can always opt for a simple salwar-kameez or churidar-kameez and set that off with light jewellery.
