But you feel the exact opposite. The pregnancy seems more like a burden. Is it normal to feel so?
"Yes, it is absolutely normal to feel burdened. And it is more common among career woman," says Mumbai based Psychiatrist Dr. Nirmala Rao.
So what robs you of your happiness?
Unexpected!
You didn't plan it to happen. So the news came as a shock and is least thrilling.
In such situations some women even go to the extent of getting the pregnancy aborted. But abortion is not a solution when your family is eager to have the child.
Gynaecologist Dr. Reshma Rafi Advises…
- Change your attitude. The birth control alternatives don't always work.
- Start thinking positive. Having a baby is not the end of anything. It will certainly bring changes in your life, but with family support, it can be handled.
- Read up on pregnancy and parenting, so you get a fair view of what you are going to go through.
- Your gynaecologist may also recommend counselling sessions consisting of videos on labour, changes during pregnancy and possible complications.
Fear Factor
"What if there is a complication?" "What if I have to go in for a C-section?" Such questions may dampen your enthusiasm about being a mom.
Such kind of fear stems from either lack of or wrong knowledge and fears are usually baseless.
Gynaecologist Dr. Tandon Advises…
Read up on pregnancy and consult with your gynaecologist. You could even set up a counselling session where you can discuss any doubts and concerns.
Go for regular prenatal checkups. If anything seems off, immediate measures can be taken to avoid complications.
You could also join an antenatal class.
Hormonal Quirks
Pregnancy ushers in myriad physical and emotional changes. Morning sickness, swelling of the hands and face, backaches and constant fatigue can get to you.
These changes are especially common in the first and last trimester.
Gynaecologist Dr. Reshma Rafi Advises…
Most of these side effects will disappear gradually after your third month. Meanwhile there are ways to cope with common pregnancy pain points.
A proper diet combined with a healthy lifestyle will ease half your discomforts. If the nausea, vomiting or pain tends to overpower your entire day, then medications are available to bring it under control.
