Believe it or not, whether your little one grows up to be an optimist or otherwise, is completely dependent on you! Self esteem is built over a period of time.
Being the Role Model…
Dr. Jyoti Maheshweri, Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist, says that children look up to parents for a sense of identity. This means that your kid will try to behave like you.
This is an important stage that will eventually decide her personality. That is why it is important to set the right example.
Spread the Love
You know that you love your baby more than anything or anyone in this world. But wait a minute! It is not necessary for your little one to take for granted that you love her.
You have to show her, through you words and actions. Keep reminding her that you love her. Only then will she feel loved and accepted.
Are You Listening?
You need to be an attentive listener. Your child will become more confident if she knows that whatever he is saying is being heard and responded to, by you.
For example, if he has to tell you something important, make sure you leave everything you are doing (like reading the papers or chopping vegetables) and listen to what he has to say.
Also, don't just be a passive listener! Be active in your response to what he has to say. Ask questions that will show him you're interested. Treat her like an adult. This will do wonders for his self esteem.
"You Can Do It!"
Yes, encouragement is one of the best ways to build up positive self esteem in your little one. Even if she has to go through failure, praise her efforts! Don't focus on the failure.
For example, let's say, your child was trying to get selected for her school's dance team, but did not make it.
It is always better to say, "I am proud of how hard you worked for this…", rather than saying, "Next time you can work harder to be in the dance team."
No Fighting!
You must have a healthy environment at home so that your little one can develop positive self esteem. If your spouse and you fight all the time, it is impossible for your child to be happy and nurture self confidence.
In fact, he will probably go into his shell. Respect everyone around; this includes the maid and the gardener. This will show him that everyone in society is equally important and needs to be treated with respect.
Set Rules
Discipline sets boundaries for your little one and rules will help her to stay within them. When you set a certain rule, you should also make clear, the consequences of breaking that rule. This way she will learn to be more responsible.
Hugs of Love
You might think that holding or hugging an older child is embarrassing. But it is quite the contrary. Be spontaneous with your love for your child. Always remember hugs and kisses are the best way to express your love.
Don't Overdo It…
Remember, kids are extremely perceptive. She will understand when you are faking it. Never over-shower older kids with love and affection in public. They may feel embarrassed and become resentful.
The bottom line is… be genuine with your feelings for your child.
