You have been cribbing about the pollution and degrading environment since forever. Perhaps it is time to do something about it. Start at home by teaching your kids the importance of helping the environment.
Here are 15 eco-friendly tips to get you started.
- Start with saving water. Take shorter showers and tell the children to do the same.
- Always close the taps while they brush their teeth or wash their face and hands.
- Make two different bins - one for bio-degradable and one for non-biodegradable waste. Ask your kids to do the same thing in school if possible.
- Make this a rule… Turn off the lights and power switches if not in use.
- Ask them to collect all recyclable paper, cans and bottles, so that you can send them to the recycling plant.
- Encourage your kids to give away their old toys, clothes and books to charity instead of throwing them away.
- Get together and plant trees around the neighbourhood. Include other neighbours if possible.
- Reduce TV time. Instead do family activities or send the kids out to play. This will keep the family involved and the kids physically active.
- Organise a weekly clean-up drive around the neighbourhood. Give the kids different areas to clear out.
- Leave the car home. Use bicycles or walk wherever you can. This will not only keep the environment healthy; it will keep you fit too!
- Buy them a lunch box with their favourite cartoon character. They will love it and you won't waste disposable packs. Ask them to share the idea with their friends.
- Joining a carpool for school and other extra-curricular activities is a good idea to save fuel and reduce pollution.
- Use only rechargeable batteries. So every time that toy remote goes off, just recharge!
- Always use both sides of paper and tear as few pages as possible.
- Avoid using plastics, if possible. When you go out shopping, carry your own bags.
