Your relationship with your colleague would be a little strange. On one hand, they would look to you for favours (not to mention leaves), while, on the other hand, they would never confide in you about the politics of the office.
So, while you are one of the most sought after, you are also the most hated.
Inside Out
Having a relative for a boss may have its advantages, but it could also be a cause for problems.
Chiradeep says, "Since he is my uncle, I cannot tell him anything about the different issues in the office that I feel strongly against.
Bitching is out of the question for me and everything I do, I have to remember my uncle's prestige and honour in the office. It is kind of limiting. I don't have that fun that most other people have."
Dr. Dayal Mirchandani, Behavioural Science Foundation, advises:
There are two situations here. One is where the boss/father does not want to take any chances and behaves equally with everyone. He does not want his subordinates to talk about how he favours his daughter/son.
The other one is where the boss/father (in this case, uncle) showers all the favours on her.
Both these situations are not ideal. There has to be some middle line drawn so that everyone is happy.
Ideally, the boss should always admit that his subordinate is his offspring, but on the other hand, never cross the line of professionalism.
But the most important thing is to keep the communication flowing. Once the communication stops, misunderstandings happen.
If your parent is 'embarrassing' you at work, speak to her. Lovingly but firmly, make her understand how it is a problem with you at work, and how your colleagues tease you.
Tell her that if she needs you, she should call your extension or send you a mail. Last but not the least; promise her that if she needs your help, you will be there in a jiffy!
With colleagues, jealousy and back biting issues is quite normal. However, if you want a position of trust, you have to earn it. Talk to them, and moreover, show them your loyalties.
For example, make sure that the discussions with colleagues don't go to the boss, but then again, make sure the discussions with the boss don't come to the colleagues either.
