It takes about a month for your body to regain its hormonal balance and get back to functioning normally.
Not only do you need special care, but you also must get a few tests done in order to avoid complications.
Mandatory Check-Ups
An ultrasound is mandatory after a miscarriage. The ultrasound detects parts that have not been fully discharged from the uterus.
If there is anything remaining you need to get a Dilatation and Cutterage (D&C) procedure done as soon as possible.
Doing this in time will help prevent infections and other complications. If the ultrasound does not show any remaining products of conception then you do not need to go through a D&C.
In fact an unnecessary D&C could scrape out the essential tissue lining of the uterus and that could lead to infertility.
If the tissue that is located at the uterus lining is scraped out, it is very difficult to repair the damage in order for you to conceive.
You also have to go for a BETA-HCG blood test to determine whether the uterus has cleared out completely. While you are pregnant, the test values are between 100-1000.
After you have miscarried and the bleeding is over, the test values should come back to zero.
What to Watch Out For
If you have been bleeding over two weeks or more after your miscarriage there are chances of the haemoglobin dropping.
In such a case you need to consult your gynaecologist and start having iron tablets or other medication.
No Sex Before 6 Weeks
Post miscarriage you might want to conceive as soon as possible in order to overcome grief and loss of the baby.
But remember after a miscarriage the mouth of the uterus is open and prone to infection.
For the first two weeks while you are bleeding your uterus is clearing out the remains of the miscarriage.
During this period any foreign particle like the semen can cause infection. Wait for at least two months before you start trying for another baby.
Pregnant Again
If you are pregnant again you need to be cautious this time. As soon as you miss your periods consult the doctor and get a blood test done.
A blood test will confirm your pregnancy sooner than a sonography.
You need to take a lot of rest, eat a well balanced nutritional diet, so that you can prevent miscarriage this time.
Your gynaecologist is most likely to ask you to take folic acid vitamin tablets and hormonal tablets to correct the hormonal imbalance caused by the previous miscarriage.
