The missionary position can safely be called the most common position couples opt for but it may not be the most pleasurable or advisable. Here is why:
- Heavy on the delicate?
The missionary position is the most unscientific of all positions. A man is generally taller, stronger, heavier and muscular.
The woman, in comparison, is shorter. Her body is softer and relatively delicate. This heavy on the delicate combination makes it a less pleasurable experience for the woman.

- Lack of sensitivity
When a couple uses this position, both the man's hands are preoccupied in supporting his body. Why is it a disadvantage? Palms are the most important instruments of pleasure during sex. They have four times more sensitivity than the rest of the body. With this position you will be depriving each other of the arousal and pleasure that is got by caressing and fondling.
- Not conducive to orgasm
Around 80 percent of women's orgasm pleasure comes from the clitoris, which is situated above the vagina. But sex in the missionary position leaves the clitoris completely untouched. Hence a woman may find it difficult to have an orgasm in this position.
- Too eager, too fast
When a man is on top of a woman, he tends to penetrate the women immediately. This can lead to a less pleasurable experience for the woman as women need at least 20 to 25 minutes of foreplay for complete arousal. At times this eagerness of penetration can also lead to a pain as the woman's vagina will not be relaxed and lubricated.
- Dangerous during pregnancy
Having sex in the missionary position during pregnancy is a complete no-no. Your partner's weight and aggression can lead to complications and a miscarriage.
