A prolapse is a condition that happens when your organs bulge out and move out of their original position.
An utero-vaginal prolapse is the prolapse of either the uterus or vagina.
Watch Out For...
In case of prolapse of the uterus, you may observe your uterus, bladder and other pelvic organs bulging out of the vaginal opening. This depends on the severity of the condition.
Along with this, you will experience pain in your lower abdomen as well as a heavy feeling in your vagina. You could also be suffering from vaginal prolapse if;
- Your vagina seems displaced, either to a posterior (rear) or anterior (frontal) position.
- Your vagina seems extremely 'loose'.
Apart from these obvious symptoms, also look out for;
- A swollen feeling in your vagina.
- Pain in your lower back.
- Unusual vaginal discharge or even bleeding.
- Discomfort while urinating and passing motion.
What are the Causes?
Utero-vaginal prolapse is can be caused by natural body processes, so be careful if;
- You have had more than one child.
- You are reaching menopause.
You could also have this condition due to lax pelvic muscles and tissues, caused by lifting heavy objects over a period of time. This puts extra pressure on your abdominal muscles. Utero-vaginal prolapse could also be hereditary.
Prevent It!
Here are some ways in which you can try and prevent this condition.
- Exercise your pelvic muscles, especially while you are pregnant. Ask your doctor about pelvic floor exercises.
- During delivery don't start pushing, until your cervix is fully dilated.
- If you have reached menopause, you could go for hormonal replacement therapy. However, consult with your doctor first. Also, continue the pelvic exercise.
Treatment
Usually, a surgical procedure is advised to tighten the tissues in and around your uterus and vagina. In some cases the uterus may be removed. In mild cases, pelvic exercises are advised. The earlier you detect and treat it, the better. So visit your gynaecologist, if you have experienced any of the symptoms.
