But then, on your 5th anniversary, he gives you herpes as a present.
Herpes is a lifelong chronic viral disease that mostly remains in a latent state in your body, and can recur every now and then.
We asked the experts at Antarang, a Mumbai-based sex clinic that specialises in Sexually Transmitted Infections for advice on how to keep this disease from spreading and recurring at short intervals.
Know Your Symptoms
Herpes is like a painful version of a skin break out.
Many times you could confuse herpes with sores or rashes. So make sure you know what you are dealing with. Here are some of the symptoms you need to look out for.
- Fluid filled lesions anywhere on the body. (But, be more careful if they erupt in the genital or mouth area)
- Pain in the infected area
- Itching
- Burning
Also look out for;
- Slight fever when the lesions erupt
- Headaches
- Pain while urinating
If you find you have all or most of these symptoms, make sure you get it diagnosed and treated immediately.
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Exchange of fluids during sex is one of the primary reasons for the widespread recurrence of this disease. If you are sexually active, then the important thing is to stay committed to one partner.
Basic protection like the condom is a must. Herpes can also spread through oral sex with an infected partner.
So, if you have herpes (especially herpes in the mouth or genital area), refrain as much as you can from indulging in oral sex.
