According to Dr. Bhonsle, there are two types of sex addicts. The first one is the kind who is in denial about being addicted to sex. The second one has some insight into the problem, but is unable to do anything about it.
Here are some ways you can find out if you or a loved one is addicted to sex. Ask, do you:
- Watch excessive pornography, in the form of books, magazines and videos.
- Feel powerful while having sex, and feel depressed afterwards.
- Demand sex from your partner, regardless of time or situation.
- Generally feel depressed in life.
- Probably have sex with multiple partners.
- Not show any intimacy during sex and even after sex, because all you want is your feeling of ecstasy.
- If someone shows concern with your pornography problem, you will probably have violent outbursts.
- You may stock pornography at your workplace or at home.
- You may not have close friends from the same sex.
Remember, it is not necessary that if you exhibit one of these symptoms, you are actually addicted to sex. However, if you observe that more than two of these instances keep recurring, then it is possible that there is an addiction.
Seek Help At the Earliest
According to Dr. Bhonsle, if you think you or your loved one is addicted to sex, the critical point and the first step to recovery is "admitting that there is a problem."
However, if you are in a state of denial, then it is important to start treatment immediately.
Dr. Bhonsle says, "Don't just go to any psychotherapist or psychiatrist. You need to go to someone who has got prior experience with people who are sex addicts."
Also, it is important to analyse the patient's personality type before opting for the proper treatment. Apart from that, treatment will also include psychotherapy and counselling.
