1. If an HIV positive couple is planning on conceiving, then they need to go for pre-conception counseling. They will be counseled about their economic and social responsibilities to their unborn baby.
The mother-to-be has to be careful about her diet. She needs to get her iron, vitamins and proteins. Her doctor can prescribe a nutrious diet for her.

2. A pregnant HIV positive woman will be given folic acid supplements three months before she wants to conceive. This is essential in the formation of both red and white blood cells and will help keep her body as healthy as possible before conception.
3. She needs to make sure that she continues using a condom after her conception. This will prevent the spread of any other infections and will also avoid possible complications during her pregnancy.
4. She will be given additional drugs during her pregnancy and her delivery in an effort to prevent the spread of the infection from her to her baby. She needs to take those medicines and have a diet that is rich in iron, vitamins and minerals.
5. After birth even if her baby tests HIV negative, she will be given medication as a precautionary measure. The woman will not be able to breast-feed her baby, since HIV can pass through breast milk.
If a person living with HIV is planning to have a baby, they must ensure that they plan for their baby's financial future. This will ensure that she will have no problem in the future.
