Myth: Only people with oily skin get acne.
Fact: While people with oily skin are more likely to have acne, people with dry skin can get them as well.
Dr. Kalpana Sarangi, Dermatologist and Cosmetologist explains, "Acne is related to hormonal changes. It can even be caused due to medication or allergies or even any local application. Apart from that, you might even get them if you overuse a heavy moisturiser."
Myth: You only get acne during adolescence.
Fact: There are cases where older people and even babies get acne as well.

Dr. S. E. Merchant, Dermatologist explains that during teenage years, you are more likely to get acne. However, acne can happen anytime. Remember, hormones can get unstable any time and because of that, you can get acne.
Myth: Eating a lot of chocolate can cause acne.
Fact: It will not.
According to Dr. Merchant, there is no evidence that eating chocolate can cause acne. However, it is advisable not to over-indulge in chocolate as it is high in fat and has no nutritional value.
Myth: Getting rid of blackheads and whiteheads can get you rid of acne as well.
Fact: It does not.
Dr. Merchant tells us that once a blackhead is removed, another one will erupt somewhere else.
In fact, extracting them in an incorrect manner can actually give rise to acne and spread the infection.
Squeezing and picking on them can also hurt the surrounding tissue which can in turn result in permanent scarring.

Myth: Washing your face many times a day helps ward off pimples.
Fact: Over washing your face will only make your skin dry, which in turn will prompt your oil glands to work overtime.
Dr. Merchant says that you should just wash your face three times a day. That is enough to keep your skin clean.
Myth: You should apply toothpaste on your acne.
Fact: You should not.
Dr. Sarangi explains that toothpaste actually burns your skin. So it is not advisable to apply it.

Myth: Apply your saliva on the acne to make it go away.
Fact: It won't really help.
Dr. Sarangi explains that while it is not as harmful as applying tooth paste, there is no scientific evidence that saliva cures acne.
