Before you pick your fragrance, know the essentials - a perfume is a concoction of different fragrances, which come together to give you a distinct flavour. These layers of fragrances are called the notes in a perfume.
The top note is the the first layer of the fragrance - it emits the first wave of smell you get when you spray it. It is followed by the middle note, which is the most intense part of the perfume and decides the character of a perfume - whether the perfume will be called spicey, woody or floral. The base note is usually a subtle, sophisticated and warm after-smell that lingers after you have sprayed it.
