"However, this is a common and natural process and you don't have to worry at all," says Gynaecologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon, Dr. Reshma Rafi.
Nothing Is Wrong
Remember, during your pregnancy, there is increased hormonal activity going on in your body. In an around the 20th week, the hormone responsible for lactation will become active, and you will experience a low production of milk.
However, you may also get higher production than just a spurt. If this is true for you, make sure you use a nursing pad inside your bra to stop the leaking. If it is too excessive, use a breast pump to remove the excess milk.
The initial secretion will be a watery, milky white consistency. In fact, it also could be colourless, even yellowish in colour.
About Colostrum
According to Dr. Rafi, Colostrum is rich in nutrients and helps your unborn child. Here's how:
- It contains antibodies that help protect new babies from infections.
- It has more protein, but less carbohydrate and fat than mature breast milk. It's easy to digest and has just the right amount of nutrients you baby needs in the first few days after birth.
Problem Areas
However, make sure you look out for the following signs:
- If your colostrum has blood in it and is accompanied with pain and soreness in your breast and nipples, it could be an infection. In such cases, send a smear of the milk for testing and consult your gynaecologist.
- If you have had any history of fibroids or breast cancer, an examination of your milk sample is a must. You will also have to undergo breast sonography to find if there is any other complication.
Things to Remember
If you are pregnant, and nursing another child, you need not wean the child you are breastfeeding, especially if he/she is an infant. However, if your baby is a toddler, then you can start weaning her.
You can continue nursing even though you are pregnant with your second child. However, make sure you nourish yourself properly as you will have to eat enough to have proper milk production and enough nutrients for your unborn child at the same time.
You may or may not develop tender nipples during pregnancy. In this case, careful attention to your child's position can help. Breathing techniques from childbirth classes can help you cope with the increased sensitivity. Breathing techniques may also help if you become restless while your toddler breastfeeds.
