Now your child need not know that, but is it possible that your unborn baby can hear you or listen to music?
"The amniotic fluid is a good conductor of sound. Plus, hearing is the only sensory organ that develops fully before birth. So yes, your baby can definitely hear you while in the womb," says Dr. Kiran Coelho, Consultant Gynaecologist, Lilavati Hospital.
Does that mean your baby can hear everything you say? Does it mean you have to be more careful of what you say?
Relax!
In this case, hearing does not mean hearing in the actual sense. A baby can only feel the vibration of your speech and not the words.
For example, she can hear and feel your heartbeat. The constant sound of the heartbeat creates a sense of routine and security for her, which puts her at ease.
My Baby Recognises My Favourite Music!
If you happened to listen to any particular song throughout your pregnancy, then your baby relates to the beats of the song and gets accustomed to it.
"In fact, the baby breathes in time to the music he enjoys and has heard repeatedly. So when he hears the song after delivery, he recognises the vibration and may react," says Dr. Coelho.
Will Music Make Her a Genius?
Although a lot of research has been conducted on this aspect, there are no concrete results to prove that music helps in development or increases the intelligence of your baby.
Bottom Line
Listening to the music that you like will help you relax or even perk you up, if you are experiencing any of the pregnancy-related symptoms like fatigue. If you are healthy - physically and mentally - then your baby will be able to develop well.
So hit that play button and sway to your favourite song during your pregnancy. And in case it happens to influence your baby's intelligence, all the better! You've never heard of Beethoven's and Mozart's mom complaining!
