But before you take him down for stealing your thunder, you might want to take a look at a little something called sympathy pain.
Sympathy Pain or Couvade Syndrome is also known as sympathetic pregnancy. This is when men experience the physical effects of and the pains their wife experiences during pregnancy.
This is an uncommon occurrence but it does happen to a few men.
Couvade Syndrome may start at the end of the first trimester i.e.: towards the third month and go on till delivery. Your husband may experience some pregnancy symptoms or all of them. It varies between individuals.
"A lot of research has been done to find out the causes for the onset of this syndrome. There are several theories, but one cannot point out a particular reason so far," says Dr. Kamat, Psychologist.
According to psychologist Dr. Snehal Mehta, this syndrome is a psychological mindset that triggers the physical feelings and changes in men. Some dads-to-be feel anxious and apprehensive about the baby. They may also think about the changes in the husband-wife relationship and these could probably lead to physical feelings.
Besides, there maybe a very strong emotional connect between the husband and wife. The husband may want to be as much a part of the pregnancy emotionally and this could lead to the physical symptoms.
Sometimes dads-to-be do experience the one-off pains. However, if it is a pattern of symptoms, then it is Couvade Syndrome.
Ooh, Aah, Ouch
A few extra kilos and disturbed sleep are just a few of the symptoms that the expectant dad may experience. The symptoms change as each trimester progresses. Take a look at what hubby dearest feels too.
The Beginning of Baby's Life
Your husband may feel nauseous and may vomit during the first trimester.
The Growing Bundle
During the second trimester your hubby may feel the movements of the child, have backaches, disturbed sleep and even gain weight.
Here Comes Baby
Mr. Mom may suffer from indigestion, may want to urinate frequently and might even feel labour pain while you are giving birth.
It is important to remember that these are just theories. There is no conclusive reason for the cause of Couvade Syndrome.
Either way it is always good to know that you have a partner for your next midnight craving.
