So as a parent, you need to be aware of signs that call for immediate medical attention.
Here's a list of red flags to watch out for. Call the Doctor if…
- Your Baby is in Pain
If your baby is in pain, she will be irritable, difficult to console and may give you a hard time while feeding. Combine that with continued or high-pitched crying and it is an indication that something is wrong.
- She is Breathing Rapidly
Take her to the doctor if you hear her wheezing or breathing laboriously or if she has a persistent cough that is disrupting her sleep, then take her to a doctor immediately.
- He Can't Keep Food Down
In case your kid keeps throwing up or has diarrhoea, you must inform your doctor. Sometimes kids spit out food, simply because they don't like the taste or are full. Do not mistake that for vomiting. If the vomiting seems unforced, only then do you need to ring the alarm.
- Your Kid has a Prolonged Fever
A fever is simply nature's way of telling you that your child's body is fighting an infection. That may cause her to run a temperature for a day or two and she may respond well to the medications.
However, if the fever does not come down, then you should check in with your doctor.
- She has Skin Rashes
Any red or black spots or blisters on your child's skin should be examined. If the sore or blister is warm and tender on touch, is irritable and appears to be spreading, then immediately see a doctor.
- He has Minor Injuries and Excessive Thirst
Minor injuries like a cut or a small bruise usually heal within a week or two. Wounds taking long to heal accompanied by a sudden increase in thirst might be a symptom of diabetes.
- She has Difficulty Walking
If your baby refuses to walk or doesn't use her arms or legs as frequently as she usually does, then let the doctor know. A funny gait while walking is also a cause for concern.
- His Skin is Discoloured
Blue or ashen coloured skin, finger and toe nails might be a sign of breathing problems. A yellow tinge to the skin may indicate jaundice.
Depending on your child's age and severity of the symptoms, you can wait sometime before you call the doctor.
However, if your child is less active or may be more hyper than usual, then consult a paediatrician without delay.
