The Gujarati bridal dress known as ghadchoru is draped from the centre back and the pleats towards the centre tucking it on the left side.

As per the Gujarati tradition, you also have to wear a paanetar, which is a white silk saree with a red border. Since the paanetar is given by the maternal uncle, the bride has to wear it!

The ghadchoru is worn over the paanetar. Your maternal uncle will also give you jewellery, which has to be worn along with it.

Ghadchoru

The ghadchoru is the bridal dress. The traditional ghadchoru is rich in zari work and is much heavier. The focus is entirely on the pallu since you have to drape it in the front.

The traditional colours of the ghadchoru are red, maroon and green. Choose a saree made in silk or georgette. The traditional wedding saree includes bandhani print - a fabric made using the tie-n-dye technique. Team the ghadchoru with a net dupatta for added effect.

Today however, brides also wear the ghadchoru in different colours. You can choose from among pastel shades or earthy tones. If you do not wish to wear a bandhini print saree, embellish a saree with Swarovski crystals.

Two Is Fun!

On the wedding day, wear the paanetar first and then the ghadchoru. As per the wedding rituals, the groom's family gifts the bride with jewellery and make-up kit.

After the kanyadaan is done, you have to change into a saree gifted by the groom's family. However, the paanetar remains the same.

Bejewelled!

A Gujarati bride must adorn herself with certain jewellery pieces on her wedding day. Here is a list of the ones you need:

• Red coloured bangles known as chudas are a must on each hand. These are made of ivory and are embedded with gold.
  
• The bride has to wear a mindhol - a red thread entwined with a walnut shaped object  obtained from a tree is known to ward off the evil eye.
  
• You will also have to wear the lodha nu kadi - a metal ring worn either on the fingers of your hand or toe.

Style It!

You can always add individuality to your bridal outfit. If you like, add a bit of bling to your trousseau. Carry a stylish clutch purse in gold or silver to match your outfit or jewellery.
