Funk Up with Ceramics
There is plenty to choose from when it comes to kiddie tiles. Take your little fellow along with you to the store to pick the tiles for his bathroom. Yes, he can choose from froggies in the rain, butterflies, a colourful sea world and so much more.
Brands like Kajaria, Varmora and Euro have good quality tiles and variety too. Expect to pay anywhere from Rs.30 per sq. ft. depending on what you choose.
It is a good idea to pick a two-colour combination for the wall tiles. For example, choose from a blue and yellow or a maroon and cream. Use the lighter colour for the upper half and the darker one for the lower half. Intersperse the upper half with kiddie motifs. The motifs could cost you about Rs.25, for an 8-inch by 8-inch tile.
Choose regular ceramic anti-slip tiles for the floor. They are available for about Rs.25 per sq. ft.
The entire bathroom would cost you about Rs.8000 for the tiles.
Light Right
Prepare a lighting plan for the bathroom before you begin the work. From the wiring to the plug points and lights, make sure you know where it all goes before the tiling is done. This way the wiring can be completely concealed.
Include a plug point for the geyser and another one next to the mirror for the hair dryer etc. You could also include one for an exhaust fan.
You must have one bright main light for the bathroom and one above the mirror. It is better to choose white fluorescent lighting in the kid's bathroom.
All this will cost approximately Rs.1500, which includes labour charges for fitting in the plug points and lights.
Safe with the Sanitaryware
Like the master bathroom, choose sanitaryware from brands like Parryware and Hindware to match the tiles of the bathroom. Make sure you choose washbasin and water closet (WC) patterns that are sturdy and rounded on all sides.
Ideally choose a washbasin that can fit into the counter top so there is less chance of the kids putting their weight on the sides of the basin. You can include a laminated marine ply storage cabinet below the basin. The cabinet along with the laminates should cost you about Rs.1500.
You can expect to pay anywhere from Rs.800 to Rs.1300 for a washbasin and about Rs.2500 to Rs.3000 for a wall-hung water closet (WC).
Include a couple of marble shelves around the bathroom. Avoid glass shelves, as they are too delicate for a child's bathroom. As marble costs about Rs.80 per sq. ft. you will have to spend about Rs.480 for 6 square shelves.
