Architect Kunal Shah says, "For home flooring, a 'retro modern' theme is in vogue. Clients like to use big, light coloured tiles, which are cost effective and look formal.
Riyhad Kundanmal, Architect believes that vitrified glazed tiles with non slip coating work best for homes. He likes to use textured and toned ones. These look similar to marble and richer than the normal ceramic ones.
The Modern avtar of Ceramics
Ceramic mosaic tiles are the old fashioned choice you see in most old homes. Now-a-days, ceramic tiles come with a durable glaze finish on them. It is like having a permanent plastic coating that prevents staining. So they are ideal for your kitchens.
Also, since they are slip proof, they work well for wet areas like bathrooms. These tiles are used in both wall tile and floor tile applications. They are available in the range of Rs.30 to Rs.70 per square feet.
Porcelain tiles are fine grained and smooth and available in matte or a high polished finish. They are stronger than ceramic ones and are long lasting... and cost the same!
Kunal advises, "Use matt instead of glossy tiles in bathrooms since they get slippery when wet. Also, Bisazza Mosaic is a preferred choice today over ceramic tiles for the bath area." These are 1"x1" in size and are available in 12"x12" size sheets ranging from Rs.250 to Rs.650 a square feet.
