Get a Pap-smear test done to detect the possibility of cervical cancer, as well as common infections of the cervix and vagina.
What is a Pap-smear test?
This test examines the cells from the cervix and vagina for any abnormalities. The procedure is simple - the gynaecologist takes a sample of the cervix cells by inserting a stick with a head like ear bud through the vagina, into the cervix. The sample is smeared onto a glass slide and sent to a pathology lab. It would then take about a week or two for the test results to come.
Does every woman need to do a Pap test?
It's a myth that only women over 30 need to do a Pap-smear test. According to Dr. Ranjana Dhanu, Gynaecologist every woman who has been sexually active for over a year must do an annual Pap-smear test. "Today, women are sexually active at a much younger age and have multiple partners too. This makes them more prone to infections and abnormalities, which is why a Pap-smear is all the more essential," affirms Dr. Dahanu.
When is the best time to do it?
A Pap-smear is done mid-cycle, at least two days after you are through with your periods. Remember not to use tampons, vaginal douche, deodorants or disinfectant creams at least three days prior to the test.It is also advised that you refrain from sex two days before the test.
What does it detect?
A Pap-smear test detects common vaginal infections, cell defects that could lead to cysts and cervical cancer. Your gynaecologist will explain your Pap-smear results to you. In case there are 'abnormalities', don't panic - it could be a small infection or a tendency towards developing a cancer. It's not actual cancer and these tendencies and infections are completely curable through medications.
