Floral Designs
If coloured powders are not your forte then try the south Indian style of floral rangoli. A bigger design may prove to be bit expensive for you, especially since it requires different coloured flowers.
So the best bet would be to go for a smaller design. To get ideas on floral designs, try visiting South Indian temples during festival time, especially during Onam where a floral rangoli is a must.
South Indian Kolam
The South Indian kolam is distinctly different from the colourful rangolis of the north. It is made of rice flour and is usually non colourful. It is mostly symmetrical patterns or just a continuous line that curves around to make a beautiful border or design at the centre of the yard.

The rice flour is the offering of food to the hungry insects. That is why they use rice flour over any other coloured powder.
If you feel the designs are looking drab, then you can spunk the rangoli by decorating it with lamps and flowers.
