Fixing Power Failures
If the electricity goes off in your house only, it is usually a problem with one of the appliances. First things first, turn off all switches to heavy appliances like your refrigerator, microwave, television, etc. Leave a light on in each room, so you can detect where the problem lies.
Also remember to turn off all Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCB) – they are the tiny switches on your main board that automatically shut off when there is an overload or a short circuit.
Then, turn on the main switch – it usually is the black knob to the left. Now carefully turn on each of the MCBs until the electricity comes on in all rooms. While doing so, if the power cuts off again, then you know that there is a problem with that line. Leave it for now, and turn on the rest of the switches.
Next, go into the problem room and unplug all appliances. Then turn on the MCB – this time, the power will not trip. Now, plug in each of the appliances, one at a time. When the power trips again, you will know, that particular appliance is faulty. Leave it off and call an electrician or your service centre to fix it.
Sometimes the power trips because there are too many appliances connected on one switchboard or one line. This is called a power overload.
For instance, when the microwave, refrigerator, washing machine and television are on the same line and are on simultaneously. In such cases, reduce the number of appliances in use.
Electrical Essentials
When handling any electrical connections, be sure to use insulated tools. Also, always make sure that you are standing on an insulated surface like a wooden ladder, stool or platform. You could also wear rubber footwear. But be sure the soles are not wet, or it will spark off a shock.
