Velvet

Velvets are thick and soft and ideal if you want those padded sofas that make you want to sink into after a long day. Opt for darker colours like maroon, navy blue, jet-black and chocolate brown for that regal look. A thick layer of sponge beneath the velvet will give you just the right feel.
This fabric is perfect for fixed upholstery that covers up the frame of the sofa completely. You could also use it on the seat, backrest and armrests of large armchairs.

Suede is a lot thinner than velvet but equally soft and comforting. Again, you would need to have padding beneath it for that cosy feeling. Go with colours like tan, off-white or other light colours too.
If you don't want to cover the entire sofa with upholstery, make sure to at least upholster the backrest and the seat.
Suede, felt and velvet are warmer fabrics and are most comfy in winter.
