It Smells
Everyone's vagina smells. The vagina has a natural odour.
"This is because the vulva, that is, the outer part of the vagina has sweat glands, which could make your vagina smell like the armpit," says Dr. Kiran Coelho, Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, Lilavati hospital.
However, if it smells fishy or foul then it is a sign of infection.
The vagina is a sensitive area and needs to be taken care of in a gentle manner. Any harsh chemicals or irritants can infact cause or aggravate infection or rashes.
Keeping It Clean
Here are some pointers that you must follow to keep your vagina healthy and clean.
- Trim It
Pubic hair is a sign of sexual maturity. It is also a protective cover for your vagina and urinary tract. Therefore, according to Dr. Coelho it should never be shaved entirely.
Trim it regularly to a manageable level. Shaving can also cause cuts or bruises which can be a gateway for germs and infections.
- Wash
Wash the area regularly with warm water. Do not use soap, shampoo or other detergents to clean.
"Just like you have PH balanced face washes, there are PH balanced vaginal washes available at chemists. It is mild and non-chemical and is best used to wash the genitals," informs Dr. Coelho.
- Don't Douche
Douche is a mix of fluids that is used to wash the insides of the vagina.
You should never douche until and unless advised by your gyneac. Vaginal discharge protects the vagina naturally. It contains some good bacteria, which fights infection.
Douching will wipe off the bacteria entirely, thereby making your vagina vulnerable to infection and reactions to chemicals.
- Not a Flower Shop
Do not use any deodorants, talcum powder or fragranced wipes to keep the area smelling fresh. These chemicals can cause burning and irritation.
They do not keep you clean or fresh.
- Itch and Scratch
If your vulva itches, do not scratch. If the itching persists, consult a gynaecologist. Do not self medicate or apply any itch removal creams.
In case of a momentary itch, numb the area by rubbing an ice cube on the area or washing it with warm water.
- Wash and Wipe
Simply wiping the area with tissue paper is not enough. Every time you use the bathroom, remember to wash yourself with water and gently wipe the area dry.
This will prevent harmful bacteria from spreading to the vaginal or pubic area.
- Clothing
After a bath make sure your skin is dry before dressing. Moisture can cause discomfort and irritation.
Wear loose, cotton panties. Overall, wear loose clothing. Avoid nylon, synthetic or tight clothing that traps moisture around the vaginal region.
