Yes, IVF is rather steeply priced. A single treatment costs Rs.50,000 and there's only a 45% chance of you getting pregnant.
Is IVF a good solution afterall? Are there other safe options out there? Have they been successful?
India's renowned In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) specialist Dr. Firuza Parikh addresses some common concerns.
In India, there's a lot of pressure to have children and become parents. This can be stressful and often drives people to desperate measures.
Dr. Firuza's advice to couples is to be patient. "Don't put yourself in a situation where you can be exploited. This can cost you a lot of time and money," she counsels.
You have many other options like adoption. So don't panic just yet.
Also, if you're concerned about the cost of infertility treatments, you needn't rush into it. "There's a time period. You can wait a while before going in for IVF," confirms Dr. Firuza.
The best thing to do is understand the situation. Consult with your doctor, find out what your chances are.
And most importantly, be realistic about IVF. There's a good chance that you may not get pregnant.
"Doctors are not god," cautions Dr. Firuza, "IVF's success depends on the age and overall health of a woman, and the quality of embryos created."
"It's best to have a child when you're between 25 and 34 years," advises Dr. Firuza. It's when your body is most fit and able to care for your baby.
"Despite being an IVF expert, I would be glad if fewer women needed this treatment. The solution is to be reasonable while planning your pregnancy planning," concludes Dr. Firuza.
