Plan the Layout
The first thing to do is decide the layout for your kitchen. Remember, the kitchen is not like other rooms where you can move the furniture around. Once fixed, you really cannot do anything about the arrangement.
What You Need to Keep in Mind
- Decide what shape you want for the kitchen counters and along which walls you want them.
- Allocate separate space for the refrigerator and even the washing machine if need be.
Tile All
When doing up your kitchen, you need to tile not just the floors, but the walls too. Go in for ceramic tiles from companies like Varmora or Euro. You could also try Chinese-made tiles that are equally good. These cost about Rs.25 to Rs.35 per sq. ft.
You could land up paying anywhere from Rs.18,000 to Rs.22,000 for the entire tiling job.
Lay the Groundwork
After you have planned your kitchen layout, it is time to get started with the work. Lay the base for the counters. You can use kadappa (black limestone) for the basic structure.
You will need an average of 32 sq. ft. of material for your kitchen counters. Keeping this in mind, you will require approximately 82 sq. ft. of kadappa, which will cost you about Rs.2100 totally.
For the counter tops, go in for granite. Avoid the white and grey varieties as these absorb liquids and leave stains. Instead, choose the black variety, which costs about Rs.200 per sq. ft. As you require about 40 sq. ft. of granite, you can expect to pay Rs.8000.
Labour charges for this work could go up to even Rs.4000.
