Websites are bombarded with employment classifieds such as the ones mentioned above. They try to speak to your money making conscience and lure you into the employment scam.
Many of these easy money schemes require you to pay an initial investment fee. Initially, cheques for small amounts as promised 'returns' are sent. Soon these cheques completely stop coming or the ones sent cannot be encashed for lack of funds.
Legal Recourse
Legal recourse is available to people who have been victims of such scams.
"The biggest problem with cyber crimes is that you are dealing with an enemy without a face," informs Sanjay Mohite, DCP Preventive, Mumbai Cyber Crime Cell.
Although, India has a functioning Information Technology Act, it is still in an evolving phase and the laws don't cover every aspect of cyber scam.
- Register a complaint with the local police.
- Don't forget to submit the following information's - header of the offending mail, IP address, a soft copy of the email that was sent to you. Do not delete the fraud mail that was sent to you.
- If it is a case of phishing, mail the fake website link to the concerned bank.
- If you have disclosed any personal information, inform your bank to stop any transactions until further notice from you.
Moral of the story? Never believe everything that you read on the Internet, especially emails that are sent to you from complete strangers!
