Good going! You can almost see the new fit and confident you ahead.
But getting there could prove a lot tougher than it should be… if you don't take some precautions.
Set an Achievable Goal
It is natural to expect immediate results when you start exercising. However, this often leads to overexertion and causes extra stress, injuries and disappointment. "Set achievable targets for the first month," advises fitness expert Girish Talwalkar, Director, Talkwalkar's Gym.
Similarly, Yashwant Oswal, Celebrity Trainer, Cloud 9 Gym puts newcomers on an alternate day workout schedule. "That way the body gets required rest," he explains.
Be Prepared
Shopping for new sports gear and a hep juice bottle maybe fun but it isn't enough preparation for exercise.
Talwalkar counsels, "If you go to a gym, get introduced to the instructors and fellow gymmers. Spend the first week getting comfortable with the machines."
Build your workout into your routine; set aside a daily timeslot.
Do your homework by learning more about the chosen activity. For example, if jogging is your thing, find out the right technique, ideal footwear, suitable track and effect, etc.
Know When to Stop
Experiencing some pain after the first day of exercise is okay, but having trouble sitting down or a constantly hurting elbow is not.
Oswal suggests that you inform your trainer about all ailments and tender areas. "Shying away from informing your trainer or gym physio, may cause strain and damage your organs," he elaborates.
Talwalkar cautions, "If your body is very sore after exercise, you are either exercising excessively or incorrectly."
Stick to Your 'Custom' Exercise Schedule
An exercise routine that helped your friend lose oodles of weight need not have the same effect on you. Most gyms will create an exercise card for you.
Stick to your custom exercise schedule, as it considers your needs and limitations. If you want to explore alternative options or don't like certain exercises, do so with expert advice.
Stay Focused
You may tend to slack off once you have achieved those desired stats or even when you don't see quick results.
Here are some handy hints to beat the sloth in you.
- Find an enthusiastic workout buddy and keep each other motivated.
- Always visualise a fitter you.
- Share your exercise experience and achievements with family and friends. Their encouragement will keep you going.
Once you have gotten off to a great start, keep at it and soon, exercise will become an enjoyable habit.
