Did you just pee a little, involuntarily? Don't panic. Yes, it is embarrassing, but don't ignore the situation.
An involuntary loss of urine when you cough, sneeze, laugh, lift heavy objects or do certain types of exercises like jogging, is known as Stress Urinary Incontinence.
It is most common in the third trimester of your pregnancy.
But why does it happen?
As your uterus grows, it puts pressure on the bladder.
Progesterone, a hormone that is produced during pregnancy can also cause incontinence. How? It loosens the urethral sphincter (the muscles used to control the flow of urine from the urinary bladder). So when there is pressure on the bladder, it cannot stay closed.
"Trauma to the nerves and muscles of the pelvic floor during childbirth can also worsen stress urinary incontinence post delivery," says Dr. Mugdha Raut, Gynaecologist, Dr. Raut's Maternity and Surgical Home, Mumbai.
Other Possible Causes
- Drinking a lot of fluids (water or other beverages) in a short period of time increases the amount of urine in your bladder. In such situations an occasional accident is possible.
- Caffeine intake tends to increase the urine flow.
- Consuming certain foods (like citrus fruits) and beverages could irritate your bladder and lead to incontinence.
- Medications can also affect bladder function. So inform your gynaecologist about your condition.
- A urinary tract infection could also irritate the bladder and cause an increased urge to urinate.
Plug that Leak
Urinary incontinence during pregnancy is temporary and usually goes away after delivery.
"However, if things don't return to normal within six months post delivery, then consult a gynaecologist and a urologist," says Dr. Anahita Pandole, obstetrician and gynaecologist, Spectrum Clinic.
If the condition continues, you may be prescribed medication. In extreme cases, you may be advised surgery.
Meanwhile, keep these tips in mind.
- Use absorbent pads or diapers.
- Practise the Kegel exercises daily. It helps tone and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles.
- Urinate and empty your bladder regularly. When you pee, lean forward to completely empty the bladder.
- Avoid beverages that have a diuretic effect.
Don't let urinary incontinence get you down. Remember, it is a condition that can be dealt with.
