Remember kids want to have fun in whatever they do. Whether it is playing, eating or reading out. While initiating your child into reading, make sure she is having fun and you can be sure that the learning bit will fall into place.
- Mimicry Skills
Read loud enough and with expression, pitching your voice higher or lower where it's appropriate or using different voices for different characters. Sing nursery rhymes, mimic sounds wherever needed and dramatize as much as you can. This makes reading a fun activity.
- Do Not Disturb
Keep your mobile phone aside; do not break the reading session for water and washroom.
- Read When She Is Fresh
You can read out when the child wakes up in morning or afternoons after giving her a bath or in the evening. But by fixing a particular time you are giving her a time table.
- Following the Text
Don't worry about following the text exactly. You may just explain the picture in your own words. Stop once in a while and interact with the child on the pictures or text.
Once More!
Children are very expressive. If they love something they want you to repeat it. If they did not like it, you cannot force your way with them.
Do Not Ask Questions
Geeta Mathews, runs her reading institute Education Made Easy (EME) in many schools across Mumbai, strongly restrains parents from asking questions immediately after the child has completed reading a book on her own. Kids dislike it strongly and if you repeat it often, she will start distancing herself from reading.
Leave the child alone with her book!
