Second Trimester
The morning sickness will finally ease off. You will start to sleep better and will feel refreshed.
One of the most common, occurring in 90% of all pregnant women, is skin darkening. This is more pronounced in dark-skinned women.
The increased oestrogen levels might cause the area around the nipples, genitals, navel, armpits and inner thighs to darken. The pale line that runs from the navel to the pubic bone also often darkens and is called the linea nigra (black line).
Some women also notice mild skin darkening on the face. This is called the mask of pregnancy or chloasma. Your skin could also glow due to increased blood circulation. Other skin-related change you are likely to go through are;
- Red, itchy palms and soles. Use a moisturising cream to soothe it.
- Blotchy patches on your legs and feet.
- Skin tags (small, loose growths of skin) may appear under your arms or breasts. They usually disappear after delivery.
- You may also get moles. But don't worry. The ones that appear during pregnancy are usually not linked to skin cancer.
- Brittle and soft fingernails. Using nail polish may make them worse. Moisturise your nails and hands with a lotion.
- Avoid very hot baths or showers as they may cause a heat rash.
Your tummy will start to show. So switch to comfortable maternity outfits. Avoid tight clothes.
