A pregnancy is just as difficult on a man, as it is on a woman… physically and emotionally. Don't stress though. The experience can actually bring you two closer.
Be There for Her
She is likely to be intensely demanding. "In the first trimester, due to the release of a hormone called Beta HCG, the woman tends to be irritable and moody," says Gynaecologist, Dr Kiran Coelho.
Instead of snapping back, be patient with her and understand that her body is going through a lot of changes that is affecting her emotionally.
Ask her to share her fears and anticipations. You too should communicate your needs, joys and frustrations. "Telling her small things like 'I'll always be there for you' can mean a lot," says Psychologist Sonali Gupta.
Your partner will crave for different foods during her pregnancy. But Dr. Coelho advises against binge-eating on a regular basis. So pandering to her every whim might not be the smartest thing to do. Give her healthy, nutritious foods which are high in protein. It helps in increasing the growth of the cells of the baby.
You are Beautiful
A woman undergoes a series of physical changes during her pregnancy. Besides the weight gain, there might be hyper-pigmentation, which leads to darkening of the areola and the groin area. There will be a pimple and acne breakout and her skin will become dry and blotchy. She might also develop stretch marks due to the steady weight gain.
She might be feeling unattractive. So remember to tell her you think she is still beautiful. You could take pictures of her in the different stages of her pregnancy, which will also be a pleasant memory of your first pregnancy together.
Play an Active Role
Accompany her on medical checkups whenever possible. Ask the doctor questions such as how you can be of help to your partner and be actively involved. Seeing the baby during an ultrasound can be very exciting for the both of you. So share in the joy!
Towards the last trimester, your partner will not only get restless and nervous, but will also be very tired. Even moving from the sofa to the bed can be quite a task. Try walking around with a 10 kg sack attached to your tummy! She needs adequate rest, so offer to do household chores and cooking.
