Stagnant Sex Life?
Your sex life will probably take a hit while she is carrying. But it all depends on the woman. "Sexual interest in some women may increase due to increased congestion in the pelvis. But others may refrain from having sex because they fear doing so will hurt the baby," says Gynaecologist, Dr. Sudha Tandon.
However, the two of you need not refrain from having sex unless advised otherwise by the gynaecologist. "After the first trimester, it is quite alright to have sex," says Dr. Coelho. Positions such as the lateral position (side-by-side) and woman-on-top will help minimise discomfort for her.
Don't be upset if she isn't in the mood though. She may be feeling tired and nauseous. Try and give her the physical affection she might be craving.
Things will Change
While you may be afraid that your relationship will change during and after the pregnancy, remember this change need not be negative.
In fact, Gynaecologist, Dr. Duru Shah finds that couples get closer during a pregnancy. "Husbands are concerned and want to make their wife feel comfortable," she says. So spend quality time together and talk about your relationship, your concerns and fears.
You may also be worried that she will forget you once the baby comes. But this isn't true. Sure, she will have another person to fuss over. But you can share the joy of caring for your baby together.
Also it is perfectly natural to be nervous about whether you will be a good parent or not. "Just as with wedding jitters, you tend to get worried about a child (new member) coming into the family. But over time, you get used to it and the bond you share with your child brings out the best in you," states Sonali.
Do Things Together
You can go for Lamaze classes with your partner and even exercise with her. "Plan things that you can do together. You can also plan out your future, including how to handle finances," says Sonali.
Talk about the issues you have instead of letting them get the better of your relationship. It is important to express yourself. Pamper her a bit…after all, she is the one carrying the baby!
